Principles of regional geology of the Czech Republic for civil engineers

The course introduces students to the fundamentals of the regional geology of the Czech Republic, with a focus on the geological and tectonic structure of the country, the main geological units of the Bohemian Massif and the Western Carpathians, and their basic lithological composition. Attention is also paid to the engineering-geological characteristics of the rock environment and its importance for construction practice. The course includes work with geological maps complemented by practical demonstrations of geomaterials.

Entry Knowledge

Basic knowledge of science subjects at secondary school.

Aims

Professional Knowledge:

  • Students will acquire basic knowledge of the geological and tectonic units of the Czech Republic and their development. They will become familiar with the main units of the Bohemian Massif and the Outer Western Carpathians in the territory of the Czech Republic and their basic lithological composition. They will acquire basic knowledge of the engineering-geological characteristics of the rock environment within individual geological units.

Professional Skills:

  • Students will be able to work with thematic geological maps of the Czech Republic, identify the main geological units and characterize their principal rock types. They will be able to distinguish the basic types of rocks and soils characteristic of individual geological environments.

Professional Competence:

  • Students will be able to apply basic knowledge of the regional geology of the Czech Republic when assessing the rock environment from the perspective of construction and engineering practice.
