Faculty of Civil Engineering BUT
Brno University of Technology is composed of eight faculties, which are the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Architecture, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication, the Faculty of Information Technology, the Faculty of Business and Management, the Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Fine Arts.
The Faculty of Civil Engineering is currently the largest faculty at BUT, with the largest number of students. It’s a modern tertiary education institution which strives for innovation in the numbers of fields of study it offers, and in the composition and content of individual subjects. Students thus have access to the latest theoretical and applied findings, and can apply this knowledge in practice. Emphasis is placed on students’ academic mobility, particularly within Europe. The Faculty of Civil Engineering offers accredited Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degree programmes as well as lifelong learning courses, and is significantly engaged in research and development activities.
Since 1992 the faculty has been located at its original historical site on Veveří and Žižkova streets. The Veveří site contains buildings A, B, C, D, E and F, which were reconstructed between 1994 and 2005. On Žižkova Street, above the Veveří site, building Z can be found. Building R, which is on Rybkova Street to the left of the Veveří site, is currently under the administration of the BUT Rector’s Office.
The main Faculty building is building A. It currently contains a canteen and a pizzeria, the CERM Academic Publishing bookshop, the faculty’s Library and Information Centre, the Dean’s Office, an auditorium, lecture rooms and classrooms. On the 4th floor function rooms are available for social and specialised events, exhibitions, etc.
Buildings B and C are situated on either side of the main building and connected to it via corridors. Building B contains the Institute of Geodesy, the Institute of Geotechnics, the Institute of Computer Aided Engineering and Computer Science, lecture rooms and classrooms. The ground floor and basement areas house the Institute of Water Structures Laboratory and the Institute of Geodesy Laboratory. An astronomical observatory can be found on the roof of building B.
Building C is home to the Institute of Railway Structures and Constructions, the Institute of Road Structures, the Institute of Metal and Timber Structures, the Institute of Structural Mechanics, lecture rooms and classrooms. The ground floor and basement areas contain laboratories and workshops belonging to the Institute of Metal and Timber Structures and the Institute of Railway Structures and Constructions. There is also a fitness centre, which is operated by BUT’s Centre for Sports Activities (CESA). A meteorological station can be found on the roof of building C.
Building D is located in the centre of the Veveří site and is divided up into three buildings: D1, D2 and D3. In building D1 one can find the Institute of Building Construction and the Institute of Architecture. Building D2 holds the Institute of Technology of Building Materials and Components and laboratories belonging to that institute. Multimedia lecture rooms are located in building D3. The areas found in the atrium are used for specialised and social events.
Building E contains the Institute of Building Testing and its laboratory, the Institute of Concrete and Masonry Structures, the Institute of Building Services, the Institute of Technology, Mechanisation and Construction Management, lecture rooms and classrooms.
Building F was transformed through its reconstruction in 2003 into the modern Institute of Water Structures Laboratory.
In building Z at 17 Žižkova Street, historically the location of what was known as the Chemistry Pavilion, one can now find the Institute of Physics, the Institute of Chemistry, the Institute of Mathematics and Descriptive Geometry, the Institute of Social Sciences, the Institute of Water Structures, the Institute of Municipal Water Management, the Institute of Landscape Water Management, classrooms and lecture rooms. The basement floors contain rooms and workshops operated by the faculty’s Grounds Maintenance Unit. In 2004 the entire exterior of building Z was repaired and provided with a new façade.
Building R at 1 Rybkova Street contains the Institute of Structural Economics and Management, the Institute of Architecture, classrooms and design studios. The reconstruction of that building is now under preparation. After this work has been completed the building will be allocated to the Faculty of Civil Engineering for their use.
In 2014, the construction of the AdMaS Science and Research Center (Advanced Materials, Structures and Technologies) was completed at the Pod Palackého vrchem campus, whose activity significantly influences the direction of research teams at the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
The AdMaS Center focuses on the development and application of advanced building materials, constructions and technologies in the field of construction, as well as transport systems, infrastructure of cities, municipalities and landscapes.
The grant for the project was provided for the period 2011 - 2014 thanks to the Operational Program “Research and Development for Innovation” from the European Regional Development Fund. Four buildings were built (three laboratory pavilions and one test hall) with a total area of 5,372 m², in which more than 250 instruments worth almost CZK 300 million are located. These are used within the framework of contract research, projects, dissertations, teaching, internships and conferences or training sessions.
In early 2020, after the end of the grant, the Academic Senate of FCE BUT approved a new Statute of the AdMaS Center, which also includes a modified organizational chart in the structure of the faculty. In 2019, the Center was able to acquire, as co-beneficiaries, the National Competence Centers project from TA CR programmes. In 2020, this project will partially compensate for earlier funding from the NPU I AdMaS UP project.
