The content of this module builds on that of the ‘Water Management Structures’ module, with a focus on irrigation structures and systems. Students will gain an understanding of the entire system, from irrigation water sources through to abstraction, storage, treatment and conveyance, right through to the detailed design of water distribution across plots of land. Emphasis will be placed on the sustainable use of water resources and the preservation of soil quality. Therefore, not only sprinkler irrigation but also drip irrigation will be examined in detail. The course will also include an overview of irrigation applications beyond agricultural purposes. During practical sessions, specific designs for individual types of irrigation details will be addressed.

Entry Knowledge

The course will draw primarily on knowledge from the subject ‘Hydraulics and Hydrology’, with a focus on water flow in pipework; the subject ‘Climatology and Hydrology’ will be used to address storage facilities; and specific solutions for certain structures will draw on knowledge from the subject ‘Water Management Structures’.

Aims

Expertise

Students will gain an overview of irrigation system design, from the water source to its delivery to crops. They will retain and understand this knowledge, enriched by specific design principles and methods, and will be able to apply it when tackling specific examples.

Professional skills

Students will be able to analyse a specific problem independently and propose basic solutions for individual types of irrigation structures, determine the design parameters and composition of cost-effective solutions for both agricultural and other purposes. Students will be able to explain and justify the solutions proposed.

Professional qualifications

Students will be able to independently apply their theoretical knowledge of irrigation and water transport, not only for irrigation purposes. They will be able to assess and interpret the most appropriate solutions and results. They will be able to work as part of a team on water management projects in this field.
